Curious About Cub Scouts? We’ve Got Answers
Signing up is easy! You can join online or at one of our local sign-up events. Once registered, you’ll be placed in the appropriate den for your child’s grade and receive information about uniforms, meeting schedules, and upcoming events. We’ll guide you every step of the way to make the experience smooth and fun!
Yes! Many of our events are open to the whole family, and younger or older siblings are welcome to join in the fun (even if they’re not Scouts yet). It’s one of the things that makes Cub Scouting great for families.
Each grade level works on age-appropriate adventures throughout the year. As Scouts complete activities, they earn awards and rank advancements. It’s not competitive—each child progresses at their own pace. Badges, belt loops, and pins are awarded regularly to celebrate their efforts.
Cub Scouting teaches core values like trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. These values are woven into everything we do—from earning badges to helping others—giving kids a strong moral foundation while having fun.
Yes! Cub Scouts offers family-friendly camping experiences—usually one or two overnight campouts each year. These trips are optional and designed for beginners. You don’t need a ton of gear or experience—just a spirit of adventure! Day trips and outdoor activities are also common.
Not unless you want to! While Cub Scouts is volunteer-run and we love parent involvement, there’s no obligation to lead. Many parents help occasionally with snacks, events, or outings. And if you’re interested, we always welcome new leaders and helpers—training and support are provided.
A den is a small group of Scouts in the same grade who meet regularly and work on age-specific adventures together. A pack is the full group of all dens combined—usually kindergarten through 5th grade—that meets once a month for larger events and celebrations.
Not at all! Cub Scouts is designed to be flexible and family-friendly. Most dens meet just a couple of times per month, and many Scouts successfully balance Cub Scouts with sports, school, church, and other extracurriculars. You can participate at the level that works for your family.
Cub Scouts get to do a wide variety of fun and educational activities: camping, hiking, STEM experiments, arts and crafts, community service, Pinewood Derby races, skits, games, and more. Every activity is designed to build confidence, teamwork, and practical life skills.
Yes—safety is a top priority. All leaders are registered with the Boy Scouts of America, complete Youth Protection Training, and undergo criminal background checks. We follow strict policies to ensure a safe and positive environment for every child, including two-deep leadership (no one-on-one adult/child interactions).
You can join anytime! While fall is a popular time for new sign-ups, Cub Scouts is a year-round program, and we welcome new families throughout the year. We’ll help your child get caught up and feel right at home in their Den.
Absolutely! Scouting is about trying new things—not already being an expert. Whether your child loves the outdoors, science, crafts, or community service, there’s something for everyone. Many families discover a love of nature and adventure together through Cub Scouts.
Parents/guardians are highly encouraged to attend and get involved, but it’s not required. Scouting is a family-centered program, and many parents find it rewarding to participating in the activities with their child or as volunteers, helpers, or leaders.
Cub Scouts meet in two ways:
-
Den meetings (by grade level) happen 1–2 times per month.
-
Pack meetings (all Scouts together) happen once a month.
Meetings are usually held at a Hope Luthern on Callaghan road —and sometimes at parks or event locations around San Antonio.
Most Den and Pack Meetings are on monday evenings
At Cub Scout meetings, kids participate in fun, hands-on activities that build life skills, confidence, and friendships. They might work on projects, play games, learn first aid, build something, explore science, or prepare for an outdoor adventure. Each meeting ties into age-appropriate goals and values like teamwork, responsibility, and helping others.
There is a registration fee paid to the national organization, and our Pack may also collect local dues to help cover activity supplies and awards. Scouts will also need a uniform, but we work hard to keep things affordable and offer assistance when needed. Fundraising efforts often help offset costs for families.
Yes! Cub Scouts is open to both boys and girls. Most packs (like ours) offer dens for boys and girls in the same grade, allowing everyone to participate fully in all the same fun and learning experiences.
Children can join Cub Scouts as early as kindergarten (around age 5) and participate through fifth grade. Each grade level has its own “Den” with age-specific activities and achievements.
Cub Scouts is for younger children (grades K–5) and is focused on family involvement, group learning, and age-appropriate adventure. Scouts BSA is for youth ages 11–17 and offers more independence, leadership opportunities, and advanced outdoor experiences like backpacking, merit badges, and high-adventure camps.
Cub Scouts is a youth program that builds character, confidence, and outdoor skills in kids from kindergarten through 5th grade. Through hands-on activities, adventures, and teamwork, Scouts learn important life values—all while having fun with friends in a safe, supportive environment.
